3. Sister James

Raven & the Dove, Cindy Lee & David Swift, original song Sister James. image of Sister James with 'Angelina' her chevy

Sister James Buchan Bush Nurse, with ‘Angelina’ her 1965 Chevy

A knock at the door, it’s young Charlie Quail
Fear in his eyes, shakes as he speaks and goes pale

The labour was long
My wife’s seems so weak and the baby is sick

“Sister come quick”

Young Daisy Moon, two fingers gone
Cutting some chaff, James hears her cries from the yard

Bring needles and thread
And something for the pain her fingers we’ve saved

“She’s been so brave”

So Sister James rides Angelina
And saves a life today
So Sister James rides Angelina
To another grateful day

[Spoken word] Angelina was a 1925 Chevy the committee bought for Sister James. So she could travel to the farms and outposts  From Gelantipy to Canni Creek - often with just a prayer and a medicine bag. You see…. there were no doctors in town back then. So the Sister was on call, as a mid-wifer, a first aider, a carer, a calmer, a hand-holder till your last breath, she saw birth, death, struggle and she’d nurse u back to health

She hears the phone, Wonders what’s wrong
Its rarely good news, that’s all part of the job

There’s trouble at the mill
The cut seems so deep and the bleeding won’t stop

“Better call the sister up”

So Sister James rides Angelina
And saves a life today
So Sister James rides Angelina
To another fateful day
To another grateful day
To another fateful day
To another grateful day
So Sister James rides Angelina…
