POWER POLES (Feb. ‘24)
A couple is separated by their life on the road,
from the big top end to the gulf below.
REVIEW BY MIKE MINEO ~ OBSCURE SOUND
A spacious rock appeal, fit for an open-road yearning, lingers on new single “Power Poles.” The production is a memorable showing from Australian duo Raven & the Dove, comprising Cindy Lee and David Swift… yearning for home is especially evident at mid-point — “sunrise, red as my eyes,” Lee’s sweltering vocals let out, as a spoken-word intermittence furthers a narrative with an endless-feeling road ahead. The guitar work in this second half dazzles with grippingly melodic fervency as soulful vocal layers converge. “Go back,” the vocals repeat, concluding with a bluesy satisfaction. “Power Poles” is a strong showing from Raven & the Dove.”

POWER POLES LYRICS
Tell me
With a thousand miles between us are you searching for reasons?
Many nights apart, tryin' to make a living
From the big top end to the gulf below
Tell me
How far can we drive 'fore we're slaves to the freedom?
First days fly, then the distance deepens
As we pretend we're not alone
All I see are power poles
Straight and unforgiving roads
Another mountain swallows home
Another mile from your arms
Green signs where the numbers play
Rear view mirror says 'wrong way go back'
Your coffee warm in my mouth
Getting colder as I'm heading south, go back
Go back, Go back
“Well it's like old Slim said
The lights coming over the hill are blinding me
The radio plays Six Days on the Road
No chance of making it home tonight”
Sunrise, red as my eyes
Low plains drifting, hot sands shifting
My mind on the load, try to call home
Just static on the radio
“Spat out a mouth full of dust
Before I made it to the black top
Just before the storm came barreling in
Last time I heard you was heading out of Alice on your way to Broome”
White lines, hypnotise
Your fading tail lights
Empty sky, empty bed
Only mirages ahead
All I see are power poles
All I see, All I see, All I see…
Green signs where the numbers play
Rear view mirror says 'wrong way go back'
Your coffee warm in my mouth
Getting colder as I'm heading south, go back
Go back, Go back
Round another bend and I'm missing you again
All I see, all I see
Round another, round another bend
All I see are power poles!
