9. Between the Pages
Between the pages of history
There’s an alternate story
It’s one the victors won’t tell
Of those who fell
The last time we saw them
They came south for the bogong
But the fence line meant trouble,
Trouble was coming
From the North drove the settlers
Six hundred head of cattle
They claimed it ‘no man’s land’
Lightening sticks in their hand
They said “it’s a Union here Jack”
With the fence line laid down
Leased selections from the Crown
Genocide was the plan
Blood spilled on the land
No evidence found
And a silent witness cries out
What else changed when you changed our names?
What song lines were erased?
Kurnai people is your story lost?
Has the trail has gone cold?
Pyramid’s ridge
Pushed over the edge
Silent witness never speak of this again
But the echoes still fall between the pages
If we can reconcile history
What comes of this story?
Is it one our children can tell
Of those who fell?
